The Auster house was designed by the architect Dr. Raphael Ben Dor along with the house next to it on 4 Ben Maimon Street. It was built in 1934 by Nasib Abkarius Bay,
a Christian lawyer who joined the British government in Palestine and later opened a private law office in Jerusalem.
He dedicated one of the houses that he built to his Jewish wife, Laya Tenenbaum, and called it “Laya’s Villa.” His second house, on 8 Ben Maimon Street, was rented out.
After the establishment of the State of Israel, the building was bought by Mr. Daniel Auster, the first mayor of Jerusalem in the State of Israel.
He lived there together with his family until their death and afterwards the house was declared a conservation building. It recently underwent a major renovation, which included reinforcement, replacement of all of its infrastructure, and high-quality remodeling of its interior.
